XR650L Routine Maintanence

Every 500 miles
Lubricate and inspect the drive chain and sliders*

After the first 600 miles
Change the engine oil and filter and clean the strainer screen (in the frame downtube)
Check and adjust the valve clearances

Every 2,000 miles
Change the engine oil and filter and clean the strainer screen (in the frame downtube)

Every 4,000 miles
Check the cleanliness of the fuel system and the condition of the fuel line
Clean the fuel tap strainer screen
Clean and gap the spark plug
Check the air filter element*
Check and adjust the valve clearances
Check/adjust the idle speed
Check the brake pads for wear
Check the brake fluid level
Check the operation of the brake light switch
Check/adjust the clutch
Check the exhaust system for leaks and check fastener tightness; clean the spark arrester
Check the tightness of all fasteners
Inspect the wheels and tires

Every 8,000 miles
Perform everything listed under the 4,000 mile interval, plus the following:
Check the throttle operation
Check the choke operation
Replace the spark plug
Check the secondary air supply system, if equipped (PAIR valve and hoses; see Chapter 4)
Check the headlight aim
Check the sidestand operation
Inspect the suspension
Inspect the steering system and steering head bearings
Replace the fork oil**

Every 12,000 miles
Perform everything listed under the 4,000 mile interval, plus the following:
Replace the air filter element
Inspect the evaporative emissions control system
Replace the brake fluid

* More often in dusty, sandy or wet conditions.
** Honda doesn’t give a service interval for this
operation, but changing the fork oil on a regular
basis will ensure conitinued good handling of
the bike and reduce wear to the internal fork
components.
